Corrie!, the new comedy play written by acclaimed playwright and long-term Coronation Street scriptwriter Jonathan Harvey, is to bring its unique brand of humour to the Liverpool Empire from February 21-26 as only the second date of a national tour.

The play, written to celebrate the soap’s 50th anniversary, condenses five decades of much-loved storylines and characters into one hilarious two-hour show. The play performed a sell-out run at The Lowry Theatre in Salford, Manchester earlier this year.

Corrie! was a huge success with audiences and critics alike; Coronation Street’s creator Tony Warren described the play as “an insider’s affectionate romp through 50 dramatic years.”

The show, directed by Fiona Buffini, features over 55 of everyone’s favourite characters, played by just six actors. They include Street legends Bet Lynch, Elsie Tanner, Hilda Ogden, Ken Barlow, Jack Duckworth and Gail Platt. Great storylines relived include Deidre going to prison, Brian being stabbed and Tracy killing Charlie. The script carefully weaves through the highs and lows of the characters living on Britain’s most famous Street.

A Former Coronation Street star will be appearing in the role of the narrator for the Liverpool dates – details to be announced shortly.

Coronation Street is the first UK soap to be transformed into a play for all fans to now enjoy around the country.

What The Papers Say:

Daily Express ****

“Brilliant….Has the audience rolling down the cobbles in laughter”

The Times ****

“Ingenious….Happy half century of howlingly, shriekingly good hokum”

Daily Telegraph ****

“Absolutely bursting with heart and humour”

William Roache for The Sun

“It’s a hilarious rollercoaster… Go see Corrie! I promise you won’t be disappointed”

Blackburne House, Liverpool’s leading women’s education and enterprise centre is hosting a series of free Open Day events for Women on Monday 10th, Wednesday 12th and Friday 14th January 2011 from 10am to 2pm.

Career Guidance and Advice, Monday 10th January from 10am and 2pm

Open Day for Young Women, Wednesday 12th January from 10am to 2pm

Construction Open Day, at 7 Greenland Street on Friday 14th January from 10am to 2pm

The free Open Days will showcase a selection of the centre’s 2011 curriculum as well, allowing any new year’s domestic make over to have a real personal touch. Many of the instructors, who are former learners themselves, will be on hand to offer guidance and advice on anything from DIY hints and tips to information on the curriculum as a whole.

Blackburne House, which this year celebrates 27 years as an education provider, has designed a unique range of courses to give women the skills and expertise to get into employment or develop their current careers, resulting in better opportunities and life aspirations. The courses aim to build not only a woman’s skills base, but allow women to grow in confidence in themselves and their abilities, especially within what are traditionally considered male dominated industries.

Claire Dove, CEO of Blackburne House says:

“The Open Days are a fantastic way for women to come along and see for themselves the kinds of courses and opportunities we offer. It is a great way to de-mystify many of the preconceptions that DIY and construction skills are difficult to learn, or that these skills are restricted from them because they are women. We are dedicated to increasing women’s confidence and skills in a safe, comfortable learning environment; giving them the knowledge to become more employable or better their chances of progression in their current career.”

The Open Days, which will take place in Blackburne House itself, will given women over the age of 16 a unique opportunity to meet tutors and current learners, as well as take part in taster sessions, to get a feel for the courses available.

Claire adds:

“Our Open Days are becoming more and more popular as women look to enrol on non-traditional courses with the aim of developing careers, rather than just getting jobs. All our courses are delivered with one-to-one support from our instructors, many of which are ex-learners themselves. Our Open Days are a great way of finding out about the learning opportunities available as well as some of the support services we also offer, i.e. our on-site children’s nursery.”

Tuesday 4th of January marks D-Day for 2011 – The date which marks the beginning of one of the busiest periods for solicitors all over the country as feuding couples retain legal representation and file for divorce.

The first working day after the Christmas break is known in the legal profession as D-Day (Divorce Day) when couples decide to end their marriage and seek legal representation for their impending divorce proceedings later in the year.

The rise in enquiries is attributed to many factors. Couples with children often hide their marital discontent leading up to and during Christmas so as not to mar the festive period for the rest of the family. Many see the New Year as a chance for a new start and as such decide to end their marriage.

Samantha Bushell, Partner at Brown Turner Ross Solicitors said:

“The first working week after the Christmas break is traditionally a very busy time, with a noticeable rise in the number of people seeking legal representation, requests for legal advice or people wanting to begin divorce proceedings. If couples feel they have no option but to end their marriage, the best advice is to seek proper legal advice; get a clear understanding of your options and address any concerns you might have regarding children, shared equity and future financial security.”

Research by the Office of National Statistics suggests the divorce rate for England and Wales fell in 2008 with 2009 figures due to be published in February 2011. The rates of enquiries are expected to fall again due to an uncertain economy and an unstable housing market: many will find it difficult to unlock shared equity for their settlements. However, if this downward trend is represented in other EU countries, the UK will still see a large number of divorce applications in 2011 and still have one of the highest rates of divorce in Europe.

The singer from Anfield was spotted in Liverpool’s Cavern Walks picking up some goodies from Boudoir Boutique, including a coat, head-band, two dresses and a Zandra Rhodes handbag.

Store owner Amy Keating says: “Rebecca was lovely, and very complimentary about the store. She kept saying how much she loved the ‘Darling’ and ‘Aftershock’ collections we have just got in, and said the bits and pieces she had chosen were the first things she had purchased since leaving the X Factor.”

Rebecca was since pictured in the electric blue head-band designed by Hannah Marsden at an appearance in Twickenham, where she performed at the Harlequins vs London Irish Rugby Match.

Rebecca has always been a regular at Cavern Walks, having worked at the Lucy in the Sky café prior to auditioning for the hit ITV talent contest.

The couple, from Liverpool, is one of 25 lucky ticket-holders to scoop a £1 million prize on the special UK-only Euromillions Millionaire Raffle on Christmas Eve (24 December 2010).

James is still in shock after checking his ticket on Christmas Day and finding out they’d become millionaires overnight. He said: “I checked my EuroMillions numbers first on Teletext but we hadn’t won a prize on the main game so I went on the lottery website to check the Millionaire Raffle number at the bottom of the ticket. I couldn’t believe it when I saw we had matched one of the Raffle numbers – I gave it to Angela to double check and she confirmed we’d won £1 million!

“We were having a quiet Christmas – just us and the kids – so we rang some close family to tell them the news and then we rang Camelot. I put the ticket in a money tin in a kitchen cupboard and we then got on with Christmas as usual but we felt so sick, we couldn’t eat our Christmas dinner!”

The couple, who have two young children, now plan to take a holiday in the New Year. Top of their shopping list is to buy a house as they are renting their current home, followed by a new car but before they do, James plans to get Angela, a nursery nurse, a present of driving lessons as she can’t drive.
